The power of Surah Al Baqarah
Many Hadiths mention the power of Surah Baqarah. Our prophet Mohamed—peace be upon him—encouraged us to read it regularly. Surah Al Baqarah is the longest Surah of the Quran and is filled with rulings, admonitions, and lessons. It addresses matters of faith and jurisprudence while recounting the stories of past nations for reflection and learning.

Surah Al Baqarah:
Surah Al-Baqarah is a Madani Surah. It is the longest surah in the Quran, consisting of 286 verses (Ayahs) and spanning Juz’ 1, 2, and part of Juz’ 3.

The Topics of the first part of Surah Al Baqarah
The first Juz` tells us the bad stewardship on Earth with Bani Israel (children of Israel). Allah tells us their crimes and fabrications in detail.
In the second part, Allah gives us a good example of stewardship on Earth of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). The comparison between the two stewardships shows you that those who obey Allah without asking about the wisdom and without useless arguments will earn Allah`s satisfaction Unlike those who do not follow Allah’s commands and or engage in futile debates will lose in the end.
The Second Part of The Surah:
Surah Al Baqarah introduces a new phase of divine responsibility for humanity. Allah tells us that Bani Israel was initially entrusted with Allah’s guidance, but due to their repeated disobedience, the responsibility was transferred to the Muslim nation. It assigns new responsibilities, including guiding humanity, upholding justice, and establishing Allah’s laws on Earth.
This part is full of Jurisprudential rulings and legislation related to the Muslim family.
The last part of the Surah:
This part shows us the greatness of Allah by mentioning 10 of His names and properties in Ayah Al Kursi which is the greatest Ayah in the Quran. Then Allah tells us some short stories that show us his wisdom and greatness.
Then, we return to legislation related to the economic system in Islam. After this, The Surah ends by emphasizing the importance of Allah’s obedience and the reward of the pious in the last two great Ayahs. You can read more in our Tafseer Course.
The Power of Surah Al Baqarah:
It has been reported regarding the virtue of Surah Al Baqarah many Hadiths. We can summarize the virtue of Surah Al Baqarah in the following points:
1. Protection from Shaytan and Evil.
Prophet Mohamed peace be upon him taught us that if Surah Al-Baqarah is recited in a place, Shaytan flees from it, regardless of whether the reciter is the owner of the place or not, and whether the place is a house or any location. The following Hadith explains this
فقد قال رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم-: لا تجعلوا بيوتكم مقابر؛ إن الشيطان ينفر من البيت الذي تقرأ فيه سورة البقرة. رواه مسلم
2. Protection on the Last day.
On the last day, we need an Intercessor to help us avoid the severe punishment of sinners. The following Hadith shows us how Surah Al Baqarah can protect you.
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسلم يَقُول: «اقْرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَإِنَّهُ يَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ شَفِيعًا لِأَصْحَابِهِ اقْرَءُوا الزَّهْرَاوَيْنِ الْبَقَرَةَ وَسُورَةَ آلِ عِمْرَانَ فَإِنَّهُمَا تَأْتِيَانِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنَّهُمَا غَمَامَتَانِ أَوْ كَأَنَّهُمَا غَيَايَتَانِ أَو فِرْقَانِ مِنْ طَيْرٍ صَوَافَّ تُحَاجَّانِ عَنْ أَصْحَابِهِمَا اقْرَءُوا سُورَةَ الْبَقَرَةِ فَإِنَّ أَخْذَهَا بَرَكَةٌ وَتَرْكَهَا حَسْرَةٌ وَلَا تستطيعها البطلة» . رَوَاهُ مُسلم
Translation:
Abū Umāma said he heard God’s messenger say, “Recite the Qur’ān, for on the day of resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it. Recite the two shining ones, Baqara and sūra Āl Imrān (Qur’ān, 2 and 3). for on the day of resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks* pleading for those who recite them. Recite sūra al-Baqara, for using it produces blessing and abandoning it produces regret, and the slothful are unable to recite it.”
*The alternative may indicate that the transmitter was not sure which word was used, “clouds” or “shades”.
2. Protection from the witchcraft:
The Quran is Allah’s miracle on earth; it must be in the heart of every Muslim who believes in the oneness of Allah. Magicians cannot harm the one who recites Surah Al-Baqarah. So, memorize Surah Al-Baqarah, for Allah will make it your salvation in this world and the Hereafter.
