Story Of Prophet Yusuf And Life Lessons

Story of Prophet Yusuf begins in the shadows of a well and ends in the light of divine triumph, a journey that teaches us how Allah transforms pain into purpose.

At Muslimi Academy, we reflect on this extraordinary Quranic story to inspire our students to trust Allah’s wisdom through every season of life. Each verse is not only a memory of the past but a mirror for our own hearts — reminding us that Allah never abandons those who remain steadfast in faith.

Who is the Prophet Yusuf?

The Prophet Yusuf is the son of Prophet Yaqub and the grandson of Prophet Ishaq, making him a part of a Prophetic family descending from Prophet Ibrahim. He grew up in a blessed family of faith and mindfulness; however, jealousy found its way into his brothers’ hearts. He is famous for his exceptional beauty outwardly and in his character.

The seed of jealousy was implanted because of the deep love of Prophet Yaqub to his son Yusuf, for his wisdom and purity. From here, the story of Prophet Yusuf began. It is a journey of pain and hope that carries timeless lessons of patience, faith, and trust in Allah. As storytelling is a heart-catching method to teach others, that’s why we at Muslimi Academy use it to maintain the minds engaged and the hearts interested.

Story of Prophet Yusuf in Quran

The story of Prophet Yusuf is described in the Quran as the best of stories, as said by Allah Almighty in Surah Yusuf to the His Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him:

We relate unto you (Muhammad SAW) the best of stories through Our Revelations unto you, of this Quran. And before this (i.e. before the coming of Divine Inspiration to you), you were among those who knew nothing about it (the Quran).

It is the best story that is mentioned in fine detail in Surah Yusuf in the Quran that teaches us patience and forgiveness. It is like a ray of light that shines in the moments of darkness and fear. Let us step into Prophet Yusuf’s story while referring to the noble verses of Surah Yusuf in each scene, to relieve every heart in pain and remind it that Allah’s mercy is here to heal.

1- A childhood dream

Allah blessed Prophet Yusuf with the divine gift of dreams interpretation, and interestingly, the story of Prophet Yusuf starts from a dream. One day, Prophet Yusuf had an extraordinary, mysterious dream. The dream was a glimpse into his great future life. He told his father that he saw 11 planets, the sun, and the moon bowing down to him. He didn’t understand it, but his father (Prophet Yaqub) realized the greatness of this dream. He recognized that his son will be honored by Allah, and advised him not to tell his brothers, to avoid their envy.

(Remember) when Yusuf (Joseph) said to his father: “O my father! Verily, I saw (in a dream) eleven stars and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating themselves to me.”

2- The Well

Out of jealousy and hatred, Prophet Yusuf’s brothers planned to get rid of him forever, so that they could gain their father’s love and attention. One day, they persuaded their father to take Yusuf on a trip to play. After going far from home, they threw Yusuf in a deep well, stained his shirt with false blood, and then returned to their father with false tears, claiming that a wolf had eaten him.

Can you imagine the fear and loudness that young Yusuf must have felt?! But, he remained patient, trusting that he was never alone, Allah was always protecting him, and planning for his rescue.

3- The Rescue: A Journey to Egypt

Prophet Yusuf was rescued by a passing caravan, which discovered and took him from the well to Egypt, where they sold him as a slave. Then, he was sold to a nobleman and a high-ranking official in Egypt called Al-Aziz.

Yusuf entered Al-Aziz’s Palace, where he adapted to his new environment and grew up under the roof of luxury with patience and an attached heart to Allah. From here, a new chapter in Yusuf’s life began, which is full of challenges and opportunities that could change his life thoroughly.

And there came a caravan of travelers; they sent their water-drawer, and he let down his bucket (into the well). He said: “What good news! Here is a boy.” So they hid him as merchandise (a slave). And Allah was the All-Knower of what they did …And they sold him for a low price, – for a few Dirhams (i.e. for a few silver coins). And they were of those who regarded him insignificant.

3- A True Test of Character

This new chapter in his life carries some trials that showed his true noble character. Yusuf was known for his wisdom, and exceptional handsomeness. Thus, he earned the respect of his surroundings. But soon, the wife of Al-Aziz accused him of wrongdoing, she tried to desire him but he refused her doings with faith and trust in Allah.

And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him (to do an evil act), she closed the doors and said: “Come on, O you.” He said: “I seek refuge in Allah (or Allah forbid)! Truly, he (your husband) is my master! He made my stay agreeable! (So I will never betray him). Verily, the Zalimun (wrong and evil-doers) will never be successful.”

4- The Prison

Even when he was innocent and falsely accused, he was thrown into prison, he chose honor and Allah’s blessings over committing a sin showing a great example of strength and faith.

He said:”O my Lord! Prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. Unless You turn away their plot from me, I will feel inclined towards them and be one (of those who commit sin and deserve blame or those who do deeds) of the ignorants.

5- Inside the Prison

Driven by patience and trust in Allah, Prophet Yusuf turned his days in prison into an opportunity to call people to worship Allah. He also used the gift of interpreting dreams to help others and remind them that wisdom and knowledge only come from Allah. He helped two of his prison mates in interpreting their dreams, then he was brought before Egypt’s king to interpret his dream about seven fat cows eaten by seven lean ones. He interpreted it with Allah’s guidance and explained that it is a warning of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of drought. His interpretation allowed them to take precautions and saved the world from starvation.

(He said)”O Yusuf (Joseph), the man of truth! Explain to us (the dream) of seven fat cows whom seven lean ones were devouring, and of seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry, that I may return to the people, and that they may know.”

6- Yusuf’s Empowerment

This interpretation is the turning point in the story of Prophet Yusuf as the king was impressed by Yusuf’s wisdom and foresight, and he freed him. Then, Yusuf became one of the most important leaders in Egypt, he organized the storage during the seven years of abundance to be able to face the seven years of famine.

And the king said: “Bring him to me so that I may attach him to my person.” Then, when he spoke to him, he said: “Verily, this day, you are with us high in rank and fully trusted.”

7- The Reunion of brothers

During the years of famine, Yusufs’ brothers went to the King’s palace in Egypt asking for food, they didn’t know that their brother became an advisor to the king. They didn’t recognize him, but he recognized him without revealing his identity. Instead of revenge, he treated them with kindness, then eventually he revealed who he was. His brothers were shocked, then he forgave them. He realized that everything that happened was planned by Allah.

They said: “Are you indeed Yusuf (Joseph)?” He said: “I am Yusuf (Joseph), and this is my brother (Benjamin). Allah has indeed been gracious to us. Verily, he who fears Allah with obedience to Him (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds, and by performing righteous good deeds), and is patient, then surely, Allah makes not the reward of the Muhsinun to be lost.”

8- The Dream fulfillment

And finally, after years of pain and loss, the story of Prophet Yusuf ends with comfort. He reunited with his family, his father (Prophet Yaqub), his mother, and his brothers. It is one of the most heart touching moments in the Holy Quran. A moment when sorrow was turned to happiness and gratitude. The childhood dream came true as his parents (the moon and the sun) and his brothers (the eleven stars) bowed before him in love and respect. Then he said in gratitude and submission to Allah:

“My Lord! You have indeed bestowed on me sovereignty, and taught me the interpretation of dreams; The (only) Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Wali (Protector, Helper, Supporter, Guardian, etc.) in this world and in the Hereafter, cause me to die as a Muslim (the one submitting to Your Will), and join me with the righteous.”
