The 4 Sacred Months

As certain places are special to Allah, like Al-Masjid Al-Haram, certain times have a greater significance too. Allah Almighty says in His divine Book:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the Book of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them.”

In the Islamic lunar Calendar (Hijri Calendar), there are 12 months, 4 of which are sacred.

The Noble Sunnah mentioned their names clearly in the Hadith of Al-Bukhari and Muslim, that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Time has completed its cycle and has come to the state of the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year consists of twelve months, of which four are sacred. Three of them are consecutive: Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram; and the fourth is Rajab, which is called Mudar, which comes between Jumada and Shaban.”

They are sacred because:

  • Fighting is forbidden during them, unless the enemy initiates.
  • Sins or wrongdoings are more forbidden, and good deeds are more rewarded.

What Does the Word “Rajab” Mean?

Rajab “رجب” is an Arabic word that means reverence and honor. In the pre-Islamic era, Arabs greatly honored this month and stopped fighting during it. Then Islam came and increased this sanctity as it is one of the 4 sacred months. It is called Mudar after the Mudar tribe that honored the month and respected it, which makes it associated with their name.

In Rajab and the other sacred months, our good and bad deeds have a stronger impact, as Allah reminds us in Surah At-Tawbah:

“So do not wrong yourselves during them.”

Other names for the month of Rajab

Rajab has many names; they are:

  • Munassil Al-Assinah
  • Rajab Al-Murajjab
  • Rajab Al-Asamm

The Month of Rajab 2025

Rajab, this blessed month that holds a specific place in Islam. It is the seventh month of the Islamic lunar calendar. In fact, there are no special acts of worship associated with this month; however, practicing extra worship is desirable and participates in elevating the spiritual feeling, in preparation for Ramadan.

Worth mentioning that the month of Rajab 2025 starts on the 21st of December and ends on the 19th of January 2026. May you be well every year.

Virtues of Rajab

The month of Rajab is one of the 4 sacred months. It is the starting point from which we prepare ourselves to welcome Ramadan. Dhul Noon Al-Musri, an Islamic scholar who influenced the Islamic spiritual thought, said to Rajab that it is the month of planting, Shaban is the month of watering, and Ramadan is the month of harvest.

Rajab is a great opportunity that Allah has gifted us. It is the chance for repentance and cleansing sins that prevents accepting our good deeds. Sins make a barrier between hearts and Allah; when we erase them by repentance, we prepare our hearts to seek Allah’s mercy. Rajab is also a month of peace without fighting since the time of pre-Islam and continued in Islam. In Rajab, rewards are multiplied, so prepare with a sincere heart for Ramadan and fill your life with obedience.

From here, Muslimi Academy encourages you to start a new era in your worship by setting the Rajab and Shaban program as a preparatory step for the best month of the year, Ramadan.

Why is Rajab Special?

1- Fighting and wars are prohibited as Allah mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah, 217:

“They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about fighting in the sacred months. Say, “Fighting during these months is a great sin.”

2- Transgression of limits is more serious, as highlighted in Surah At-Tawbah  36:

“So do not wrong yourselves during them.”

And in Surah Al-Ma’ida, 2:

“O believers! Do not violate Allah’s rituals of pilgrimage˺, the sacred months, the sacrificial animals, the ˹offerings decorated with garlands, nor those ˹pilgrims˺ on their way to the Sacred House seeking their Lord’s bounty and pleasure.”

3- Two historical Islamic events happened in Rajab:

  • The Battle of Tabuk
  • Al Isra wak Miraj

Rajab Worship Plan

As a part of our continuous efforts to get closer to Allah, Muslimi Academy suggests this spiritual plan to live the month closer to Allah and as a pre-Ramadan preparation. Try these 10 practices to recharge your soul for Ramadan.

1- Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness

Rajab is the time to open a new chapter in your life that is full of Allah’s pleasure. Continuously ask Allah for forgiveness and mercy. It is desirable to say Dua for forgiveness regularly to cleanse your sins and purify your heart. Don’t forget to forgive others, so your heart becomes light and free to enjoy worship.

2- Sunnah Fasting

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was fasting extra days other than Ramadan; these are:

  • Mondays and Thursdays of every week
  • 13th, 14th, and 15th of every lunar month (Al-Ayaam Al-Beed)

It is preferable to fast as many days as you can in the month of Rajab, as fasting purifies souls and Allah only knows its reward. It is considered a training for Ramadan, which makes fasting easier. We encourage you to get closer to the Prophet Muhammad’s life and learn from his actions through the Seerah course at Muslimi Academy.

3- Sunan Al Rawatib Prayers

These are the 12 sunnah prayers associated with the daily obligatory Prayers. They are:

  • 2 raka’at before Al-Fajr prayer
  • 4 raka’at before Al-Dhuhr prayer and 2 raka’at after it.
  • 2 raka’at after Al-Maghrib prayer
  • 2 raka’at after Al-Ishaa prayer

It is ideal to start praying Sunan Al Rawatib during the month of Rajab 2025 to be familiar with Al-Taraweeh Prayer in Ramadan.

4- Nawafil Prayers

They are praying at special times in the day, each time having a specific significance and spiritual effect. For example:

  • Al-Duha prayer (starts from 2 raka’at till 8 raka’at, its time begins 15 minutes after sunrise till 15 minutes before Al-Dhuhr prayer)
  • Qiyyam Al-layl

Gradually train yourself to perform voluntary prayers through Rajab. These extra prayers boost your spiritual connection and keep you tightly connected with Allah.

5- Morning Dua

It is the shield from the Sunnah that protects you against evil situations. Morning dua is a group of supplications to ask Allah’s forgiveness, protection, blessings, barakah, and guidance throughout the day.

6- Evening Dua

Evening dhikr also protects you from bad thoughts and evil throughout the day. We must ask Allah’s forgiveness and guidance all day and night.

7- Daily Routine Dua

Such as Dua before sleeping, Dua during trials and challenges, Dua when getting up, Dua when getting dressed, and many other duas that keep you connected and protected by Allah.

8- Reading the Quran

Daily reciting the Quran is the way you feel Allah’s closeness. Try to have a small fixed daily portion of the Quran; this facilitates making reading the Quran a habit. The month of Rajab 2025 is the best start.

9- Sadaqah

Sadaqah or charity has a great significance in Islam; it purifies hearts and increases wealth. Sadaqah can be with money, food, clothes or any beneficial needs. And always remember the Hadith of Sahih Muslim, that Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet Muhammad said: “Wealth does not diminish by giving Sadaqah (charity). Allah augments the honour of one who forgives; and one who serves another seeking the pleasure of Allah, Allah will exalt him in ranks.”

10- Silat Ar-Rahim

Maintaining family ties is greatly rewarded by Allah, and in Rajab it is multiplied. Be keen on family gatherings, showing mercy towards them. This strengthens the family bond and brings you closer to Allah.

The most important point is to think about your intention, remind yourself that you are sincerely preparing for Ramadan and returning to Allah. Now, you can enter Ramadan with a clean and ready heart to receive Allah’s blessings and feel the virtues of the blessed month.
