Dua For Forgiveness From Quran Verses

Dua for forgiveness is the solution for all Muslims to erase their sins, so that they return to the right path. It is a sort of purification of the hearts and the limbs. Knowing that all Muslims sin is the nature of human beings. But Allah is always here to accept our repentance, clear our sins, and forgive us. What a comforting belief.

In the following lines, we will discuss the most potent supplications to seek Allah’s forgiveness that help us cleanse our hearts and gain Allah’s blessings. Just keep reading.

The power of Dua in Islam

Dua, or making supplications to Allah, is the most powerful tool Allah granted us. You can face any problem and overcome any dilemma in your life through dua. This builds a strong spiritual connection and makes us feel Allah’s consciousness all the time. For example, upon getting up, we say morning dua, which brings divine protection and barakah to our day. At the end of the day, we relax our minds with a dua before sleeping, which provides peace and tranquility. Today, we will discuss the dua for forgiveness, and who among us doesn’t need it to live a righteous life in the closeness of Allah.

The Forgiveness Concept in Islam

Forgiveness is central and essential in Islam. It represents the return to Allah and clearing the hearts of sins. Forgiveness in Arabic means maghfirah, which means covering or shielding. When Allah forgives us, he covers our mistakes and protects us from their consequences on the Day of Judgment.

Allah Almighty introduces Himself as Al-Ghaffar (the Oft-forgiving), Al-Ghafour (the most forgiving), and Al-tawwab (the accepter of repentance). His names are also Ar-Rahman and Ar- Raheem which means the most and ultimate Merciful. These names reflect Allah’s mercy and remind us that forgiveness and mercy are constant concepts by which Allah deals with His servants.

The belief that our mistakes can be forgiven by Allah brings a sense of solace. It is like a hope and another chance to renew our hearts and be good people again.

Allah grants us many duas for forgiveness in the Quran in addition to those in the Sunnah, which gives us a chance to repent and heal our souls.

Dua for forgiveness connects us to Allah, providing us with a timeless divine guide, helping us to have new beginnings. At Muslimi Academy we believe that every Muslim should learn about dua for forgiveness with understanding Allah’s mercy and how it guides us back to Him.

How is forgiveness expressed in the Quran?

Allah Almighty addresses all people through the Quran verses. Many verses reflect Allah’s mercy and that He loves to forgive us.

Surah Al-Baqarah 222

Translation: “Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”

Surah Aal-Imran 135

Translation: “And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allāh and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except Allāh? – and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know”

Surah An-Nisa 110

Translation: “And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”

1- Surah Az-Zumar: 35

Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

How is forgiveness expressed in the Sunnah?

Allah’s forgiveness and mercy are also mentioned in the Hadith of Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Abu Hurairah narrated that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

Allah the Almighty descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the latter part of the night is left, and says:

Who supplicates Me, so that I may answer him? Who asks Me, so that I may give to him? Who asks Me forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say a dua for forgiveness daily, despite being the best of people. This is highlighted in the Hadith of Sahih Al-Bukhari, Abu Huraira reported:

“I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying: By Allah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.”

He, peace be upon him, also sai,d as reported by Anas:

Translation: every child of Adam is a sinner, but the best among them are those who repent.

Dua for forgiveness

There are many supplications to ask Allah’s forgiveness by which we return back to Him and renew our faith. Let’s discover the most powerful dua for forgiveness that purifies our hearts.

1- Sayyidul Istighfar

It is the superior and most powerful dua for forgiveness.

The Prophet Muhammad said about it, as mentioned in Hadith Al-Bukhari: “Whoever recites this during the day with firm belief in it and dies before evening, he will enter Jannah. And whoever recites it at night with firm belief in it and dies before morning, he will enter Jannah.”

2- Recite Astaghfirullah 100 times or more

It is stated in the Noble Sunnah that the Prophet Muhammad used to say “Astaghfirullah” more than 100 times daily, and this easy but potent dua is one of the best du’as for forgiveness.

Translation: I seek forgiveness in God

Translation: I seek the forgiveness of God, my Lord, and turn to Him (in repentance).

It is also reported by Thauban that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finishes prayer, he asks forgiveness three times.

Dua for forgiveness of all sins committed in anytime

Translation: O Allah! Forgive me for those sins which I committed in the past and that which I may commit in the future, the sins that I have committed in privacy or in public, and all the sins of which You are better aware than I am of myself. You are the One who brings forward and reprieve as You wish, and indeed You are over all things capable.

It was reported by Ibn Mas’ud that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that whoever recites this dua, his sins will be forgiven even if he should have run away from the battlefield.

Translation: seek the forgiveness of Allah, there is no true god except Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting, and I turn to Him in repentance.

Dua for forgiveness in Prayer

Abu Bakr said: “I asked Allah’s Messenger ﷺ to teach me supplication to say in my prayer. He told me to say:

Translation: Allah! I have done great injustice to myself, and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful.

Dua for forgiveness for all types of sins

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say:

Translation: O Allah. Forgive me all my sins, small and great, first and last. “The narrator Ibn al-Sarh added: “open and secret.”

Dua from the Quran for forgiveness

The Holy Quran is full of verses of forgiveness which give us an infinite hope in Allah’s mercy and not to hesitate to return to Him.

1- The Verse 23 of Surah Al-A’araf

This verse expresses regret, repentance, and asking Allah for forgiveness by His ultimate mercy. This heart-touching dua is the one said by the Prophet Adam and his wife Hawaa, when they asked Allah’s forgiveness after their mistake in Jannah.

Translation: Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If you do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be lost.<

2- The Verse 16 from Surah Aal-Imran

This supplication is to seek forgiveness and protection from hellfire.

Translation: Our Lord! surely we believe, therefore forgive us our faults and save us from the chastisement of the fire.

3- The Verse 139 from Surah Aal-Imran

A dua for forgiveness, erasing misdeeds, and asking to join the righteous after death.

Translation: Our Lord! Forgive our sins, remove from us our misdeeds, and grant that we join the righteous when we die.

4- The Verse 147 from Surah Aal-Imran

This verse talks about the men who used to say this beautiful dua during their fight with the previous prophets. Through it, they asked Allah for forgiveness, to keep them steadfast on their religion, and for victory over the unbelievers.

Translation: “Our Lord! Forgive our sins and excesses, make our steps firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.” (Al-Imran:147)

5- The Verse 87 of Surah Al-Anbiyaa

This is the Prophet Yunus’s dua when he was in the whale’s stomach and surrounded by absolute darkness. He used to seek Allah’s forgiveness through reciting this dua repeatedly, recognizing his weakness, until Allah forgave him and helped him to exit. It is a reflection of what Muslims should do in hard times.

Translation: There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers”.

6- The Verse 47 of Surah Hud

This dua is the one recited by the Prophet Nuhb. He was in an overwhelming time when he asked about his son, who was a disbeliever. Thus dua reflects his apology and total acceptance of Allah’s will.

Translation: “O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I would indeed be one of the losers.

Astaghfirullah benefits

Astaghfirullah is the simplest dua for forgiveness you can recite. It is easy and short, which enables you to be consistent and seek forgiveness regularly. By doing so, you maintain your heart clean to receive Allah’s blessings. Istighfar brings many rewards for its reciter and protects him from punishment either in this life or in the Hereafter.

As Allah Almighty said in His Holy book:

Translation: But Allāh would not punish them while you, [O Muḥammad], are among them, and Allāh would not punish them while they seek forgiveness. (Surah Al-Anfal)

Translation: And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals.” (Surah Hud)

Translation: “I said (to them): ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving;  ‘He will send rain to you in abundance, And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.” (Surah Nuh)

These noble verses reflect the impact of saying Astaghfirullah in gaining all that they need, such as money, children, rain, and Allah’s forgiveness. This is because our misdeeds can prevent rewards, but when we cleanse them regularly by dua for forgiveness, Allah rewards us.
